Drama Remakes

I thought I’d do a post showing some various remakes of the SAME dramas, since a lot of people tend to ask for ‘similar’ dramas to so&so without realising their are remakes out there worth the watch.

Although they will genuinely have the same PLOT, remakes have different characters (thus, to me at least, creating a whole new atmosphere, since no two actors or actresses are the same).

Most of the time they are worth the watch. To those who watch Drama remakes of mangas even more so, how great to see our favourite comics portrayed in so many different angles?

Popular remakes:

(The three MAIN in my opinion, anyhow.)

    Itazura Na Kiss –

began as a Japanese Manga under the same name. Has the following dramas made from it:
• Itazura Na Kiss (1996) – Japan.
• It Started With A Kiss (2005-2006) with a second Series (2007-2008) – Taiwan
• Playful Kiss (2010) – Korea

    Boys Over Flowers –

Began as a Manga. it produced:
• Meteor Garden (2001) and its sequel Meteor Garden II (2002) – Taiwan
• Hana Yori Dango (2005)and its sequel Hana Yori Dango Returns (2007) – Japan
• Boys Over Flowers (2009) – Korea

As well as the Dramas above it also has two films (not to be confused with the Dramas, which are SERIES);
• Hana Yori Dango (1995)
• Hana Yori Dango Final (2008)

    Hana Kimi –

Yet another Manga turned Drama. From the Manga came:
• Hanazakarino Kimitachihe (2007) – China
• Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (2007) – Japan
• Hanazakari no Kimitachi e 〜Ikemen Paradice ( 2011) – Japan
• To The Beautiful You (2012) – Korea

    Other notable dramas remakes:

• You’re Beautiful (Japanese remake of this drama was released in Japan in July 2011 titled: Ikemen desu ne)
• Stairway To Heaven (Philippine remake under the same name aired in 2012)
• Green Rose (Has a Philippine remake done in 2011)
• My Lovely Sam Soon (In 2008, it was remade into the Filipino series Ako si Kim Samsoon.)
• My Girl (Has a Philippine remake under the same name in 2008)
• Full House (Full House Take 2 in 2012 & Smiling Pasta in 2006)

There’s loads more, but the amount of Kdrama’s that get remade in the Philippines is crazy!

Personally I normally enjoy the originals, but in cases such as Smiling Pasta, exceptions are made. I enjoyed ALL the remakes if I’m fair, because they are all unique in some way.

Definitively worth watching them!

Playful Kiss is based on the Japanese shōjo manga, Itazura Na Kiss.

Oh Ha Ni is a sweet lively and happy high school student yet she is definitely not the sharpest crayon in the box.
She has a crush on Baek Seung Jo, the smartest boy in school despite being chased loyally by Bong Joon Gu herself.

When she confesses to Seung Jo through a letter, he brings it back to her, after grading it harshly and commenting that he hates stupid girls.
When Oh Ha Ni’s new house suddenly collapses her father’s friend offers for him and Ha Ni to stay with them.

Unknown to Ha Ni, her father’s friend is actually Baek Seung Jo’s dad.
As they continue to live under the same roof and attend Parang University together, Ha Ni continues to show affection for Seung Jo although he seems to be more interested in the equally clever and beautiful Yoon Hae Ra.

Wow, what an emotional journey this drama takes you on. I’ve already seen it started with a Kiss, and though I don’t feel this drama quite compares, it is good in its own right.

The cast was brilliant and the storyline superb, but I felt like the ending (specifically, the last 4 or so episodes) were rushed, rather than just spreading it out more (getting rid of filler scenes in earlier episodes).

That said, I am bias since i did see It Started With A Kiss first (as well as the second series) so I’d advise watching a few episodes for yourself.

Jung So Min is so cute, seriously, she played the roll of Oh Ha Ni so well. I felt her love, felt her pain but mostly, her determination. She portrays her emotions well and I was happy to follow her journey.

Kim Hyun Joong I remember from Boys Over Flowers and was excited to see him play a lead. I notice he always plays the moody, brooding and smart character rolls, but it suits him, he was great again. He portrayed his conflicting emotions well, and I really felt his frustration and reluctance as Seung Jo.

Lee Tae Sung was an actor id not heard of before, though by God did i look him up afterwards (&plan to watch his other dramas). He plays Bong Joon Goo, whose character transformation was the most progressed in the serious, I felt, and he acted out Joon Goo’s growing maturity and determination eso well.

For me, he was truly the star actor here (sorry Hyun Joong & So Min!)

Jung Hye Young I just had to mention, because she did such an excellent job with her character roll. (& she looks so youthful!!) a very funny character.

Lee Si Young who played Yoon He Ra did amazingly as well, she makes you want to reach through the screen and slap her (😅). She plays Ha Ni’s rival in love and does an exceptional job at being both harsh, straightforward yet nice at the same time. How you ask? You honestly need to watch to see.

A great watch.

“Merely because I preferred ‘It Started With A Kiss’, & felt this Drama was too rushed.”

You’re Beautiful

Basic Information:

Title: 미남이시네요 / Minami Shineyo
Also known as: He’s Beautiful / You’re Handsome
Genre: Romance, comedy
Episodes: 16

The management company of the idol group A.N.JELL insisted on adding a new singer to the group as the lead vocal, Tae Kyung’s voice was hurting. However, the new member, Mi Nam, had to go to the States to repair a botched eye job just before signing the contract.

His agent came up with the idea of having his twin sister, Mi Nyu,to stand in for him and pretend that she was her brother. The two of them grew up in an orphanage and Mi Nyu, who was all set to become a nun, agreed to this charade as she didn’t want to spoil her brother’s chance of fame which would make it easier to look for their mother.

・Jang Geun Suk as Hwang Tae Kyung
・Kang Soo Han as young Tae Kyung
・Park Shin Hye as Go Mi Nam (Male) / Go Mi Nyeo (Female)
・Jung Yong Hwa (C.N Blue) as Kang Shin Woo
・Lee Hong Ki (F.T Island) as Kang On Yu / Jeremy

My first thought was wow, what an amazing cast, and that picture is amazing!! I had to watch it, since the cast list alone impressed me.

This drama is cute, funny, has romance themes but it also quite emotional (my eyes watered occasionally!) but it’s not too overwhelming and the scenes feel realistic and not “fake” or “forced” as some do.

Great for a light watch, though will admit some episodes feel kinda fillerish, but I wanted NEEDED to know what happened.

The Music theme is great, Jang Geun Suk’s voice is absolutely amazing, and of course Park Shin Hye’s voice really accompanies his well.

The romance parts are done beautiful and the leads all played their rolls well, showing me true wary ache, compassion, frustration, confusion and most of all – the kindling of love.

Jang Geun Suk was the moody, harassed male lead who made me laugh with his various expressions and outbursts. He is also very talented, and I really felt his growing frustration, jealousy, annoyance and surrender throughout. Truly a superb actor.

Park Shin Hye was just too cute and innocent. She played the “fish out of water” well and her character is clumsy, well doing and hardworking, so loveable.

Jung Yong Hwa played the roll of Kang Shin Woo very well, he fits the moody, almost broody yet caring roll to a T. It was a shame we couldn’t hear his voice more, since he is an exceptional singer.

Lee Hong Ki to me made the drama, he was hilarious, naive, sweet, confused and just plain adorable and all his scenes made me smile. He was another who’s voice if like to have heard more of!

The extended cast played their own respective rolls brilliantly, and made this a drama truly worth watching. I would recommend it.
